Eastern Virginia Eye Associates

Chesapeake, VA

Core 22 completed the design and construction of a new 6,300 SF building for Eastern Virginia Eye Associates. The office provides comprehensive vision and eye health evaluations, contact lens evaluations, and optometry services. The first floor of the building is dedicated to the vision practice; spaces provided include examination rooms, testing areas, an optical lab, an eyewear display area, a patient waiting area, registration/billing/medical records, staff work areas, a break room/kitchen, a conference room, and a checkout area. A second-floor mezzanine space provides an office shared by Dr. Ramos and Dr. Swatts, as well as additional storage and a private bathroom.

The doctors wanted a facility that provides a spa-like feel for their patients. The building itself is clad with an EIFS and decorative stone veneer exterior. The storefronts use bronze low E glass to provide shade to the inside of the building and to help keep cooling expenses to a minimum during the hot summer months. The interior design utilizes dramatic volumes of space, geometry, and color to make the most of this building. Pendant fixtures highlight a custom-built reception desk with solid surface counters.

The waiting, hallway, and eyewear display areas have carpet tiles for ease of maintenance, and an exposed ceiling (painted black) with a silver ceiling grid to create drama. Patient exam rooms ring the exterior of the building, with staff work areas, the dilating room, and contact lens fitting areas in the center.
Flooring in the exam rooms is VCT installed in a basket weave pattern; workspaces are constructed from cabinetry with laminate counters. A pediatric exam room and a “Kids Cove” off-the-eye display area were designed specifically for children to be comfortable. Both the building and the interiors provide an eye care facility that is unique, non-clinical, and fun to experience.
