As part of community outreach efforts, RRMM Architects PC and Core 22 Design Build LLC donated design and construction services for the Aquatics Center, lazy river and splash park located at JT’s Camp Grom Adventure Park.  Our company partnered with the Virginia Gentlemen Foundation and Gold Key PHR to create an Aquatic Center on a 70-acre adventure park which is 100% handicapped accessible and the only facility of its kind on the east coast in 2018.  The center is designed for wounded war veterans, adults and children with varying special needs and their families, and our Gold Star families.

The center is comprised of a main pool area flanked on each end by two separate, yet integrated wings.  The indoor pool area is approximately 11,627 SF and is enclosed with a pre-engineered metal building skinned with red Hardie Plank siding.  In order to provide the desired open flow between the indoor pool and the immediately adjacent outdoor splash park and lazy river, large overhead rolling glass doors are installed to line the front and back exterior walls. The aquatic center has a 25-meter wheelchair accessible main pool, a small lap pool and a swim/rinse shower station.

The entrance wing houses restrooms, showers and locker rooms.  This wing is approximately 3,055 SF, and consists of multi-occupant and separate toilets, showers and locker areas.  There are four individual family use rooms, including roll-in showers and accessible fixtures, and waiting spaces at the exterior pool entry locations for non-swimming family and friends who may be accompanying the campers.  The last wing houses the pool pumps and filtration equipment and is approximately 1,487 SF in floor area.

The conceptual design of the Aquatics Center is intended to retain the overall Camp Grom theme which is a beach surfer design aesthetic, consisting of exposed wood soffits and exterior columns, lap siding and metal roofing.
