Beach Movie Bistro

Virginia Beach, VA

Core 22 Design Build was contracted to design and construct the renovation of the existing “Surf ‘n’ Sand” theater located on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach just a few blocks from the resort area. The original Surf ‘n’ Sand theater was designed by RRMM Architects PC and opened its 20,000 SF, eight-screen theater in 1991 and closed in 2001. It reopened in 2001 under new management and RRMM Architects PC renovated the seating to bleacher style and redesigned the bathrooms to comply with ADA requirements; however, the theater closed again in 2008. Virginia Beach brothers Donald Pollard Jr. and John Pollard, both with national experience in retail real estate, joined with two out-of-town partners in the movie theater business to form Beach Movie Bistro Inc. and leased the vacant building. The Pollards’ parents owned the long-gone Surf ‘n’ Sand Motel, which stood on the site that became the movie theater.

The renovated theater, Beach Movie Bistro, is an upscale dining and cinema experience featuring a full menu, movie fare, wine, and beer. It has seven screens featuring Sony 4K digital cinema projection systems with RealD 3D
capability. The scope of work included:

  • Conversion of 1 theater to a full service commercial Chef’s kitchen
  • Demolition of the lobby and snack bar to stud walls
  • New flooring, finishes, and lighting throughout
  • New full service bar in the lobby
  • Demolition of theater flooring and reconstruction of cement risers to accommodate new stadium seating with tables
  • New countertops, sinks, and faucets in the Men’s and Women’s toilets
