Core 22 Design Build was contracted to design and construct the new Black Pelican restaurant in Chesapeake, VA. Located in the Greenbrier Mall shopping center, the owners sought to integrate the history of the Black Pelican with the Old Towne Virginia style. The story of Black Pelican originates in 1874 with the construction of the Kitty Hawk Lifesaving Station in North Carolina. The station was created for the sole purpose of rescuing people caught in the dangerous waters along the Banks. During one particular hazardous storm, a Black Pelican was said to have aided the crew in rescuing a distressed vessel and was spotted hovering near the station ever since. In honor of the Black Pelican’s rescue efforts, founder Paul Shaver was inspired to rename the station Black Pelican when it reopened as a restaurant in 1993.

By combining the classic Virginian style of brick exterior with the North Carolina white woodwork, or ‘gingerbread’ style, the Black Pelican stays true to their beach roots with an Old Towne twist. The restaurant interior incorporates reclaimed wood and a nautical-themed bar for an authentic beach atmosphere. With a custom wood-fired oven for their signature pizza and other dishes, customers can enjoy a one-of-a-kind food experience in this unique atmosphere.
