L.R. Hill Sports Complex Addition

Norfolk, VA

Core 22 Design Build was contracted by Old Dominion University to construct the L R Hill Sports Complex addition in Norfolk, Virginia.  This 17,000 SF addition faced challenges early on because of the sport complex’s need to stay operational during the construction period and the tight site constraints.  Connecting along the south side to the existing complex, the exterior brick veneer and cast stone banded façade match the existing structure.  The addition features a second two-story semi-circular main entrance to the sports complex composed mostly of curtainwall with aluminum composite metal panel accent brands and canopy.

Upon entering the addition, the foyer is adorned in ODU Monarch banners, logos and trophy cases.  The first floor consists of a fully equipped, spacious new gym designed to hold a large quantity of weight machines with ample room between each work out station, a conditioning room, private offices, a large equipment storage area, coach’s lounge, coach’s locker room, coach’s shower/toilet, a women’s shower/toilet, meeting room, nutrition center, and a DYNAVISION viewing room.  The second-floor mezzanine is dedicated to cardio and overlooks the gym below.   A modern industrial style barrier of steel and mesh fencing borders the edge of the mezzanine and is repeated in the design of the stairs.

Unique to this complex is a medicine ball throwing wall, specialty gym rubber mat flooring throughout the workout areas, and biobased and static dissipative tile.
