Larchmont United Methodist Church

Norfolk, VA

Larchmont United Methodist Church building was constructed circa 1910 in a Neo-Gothic style. Several additions have been constructed over the years (circa 1920, 1950 & 1960), culminating in the main sanctuary— all designed in the Federal Revival style. Various internal alterations have also been undertaken to adapt the building for changing uses over the years. The original single-story sanctuary was adapted for use as a social hall and is a vital, heavily used facility. The growing church needed to renovate existing space and re-purpose it to support its congregational activities as well as its community outreach activities.

Core 22 was selected to assess the physical condition of the church, and create a plan for renovations, repairs, and potential additions. The assessment included structural features, architectural features, and mechanical/electrical systems. The final report documented the team’s findings and made prioritized recommendations for the church to correct.

The first phase of the renovations, designed and constructed by Core 22 Design Build, involved repairs and improvements to the kitchen and lobby areas; it also included the electric, plumbing, and heating/cooling systems needed to support this area. All new kitchen equipment was provided to replace the existing antiquated fixtures to bring the kitchen up to commercial standards. New serving windows were added to better serve the social hall and the church’s participation in the citywide NEST program which provides hot meals to the local homeless population. All spaces were designed to comply with the ADAAG 2010 requirements for handicapped accessibility. A new exterior door, windows and exterior wall insulation will reduce the energy consumption of the church.
